Local AI vs Cloud AI for Automation Projects

Choosing between Ollama and hosted AI APIs for private workflows, recurring processing, and operational automation.

Two approaches to AI inference

Local AI runs a language model on hardware you control. Tools such as Ollama can expose a local API that other programs use for classification, summarization, and text generation.

Cloud AI sends requests to a hosted service through an API. This approach removes the need to operate inference hardware, but introduces usage charges and an external dependency.

Where local AI makes sense

Local models can be attractive for repetitive workloads, private environments, and applications where avoiding per-token cloud charges matters.

For example, a monitoring script can use a local model to review matching Reddit posts and prepare tailored reply drafts. Whether this is practical depends on model capability, available hardware, and acceptable processing time.

  • No per-token cloud inference charges.
  • Greater control over where inference runs.
  • Can work without an external AI service after setup.
  • Hardware resources and model performance become your responsibility.

Where cloud AI makes sense

Hosted APIs can simplify deployment and provide access to models that may be impractical to run locally.

They are often useful when you need stronger reasoning or extraction performance, predictable API integration, or occasional rather than continuous AI processing.

Operating costs are more than API bills

Local AI is not entirely free. Hardware, electricity, maintenance, and operational reliability still have costs.

Cloud APIs introduce usage-based charges, while a self-hosted system shifts more responsibility to your infrastructure. The right choice depends on workload volume and operational requirements.

A hybrid approach can be practical

Some systems benefit from using conventional filtering first, local AI for routine processing, and a hosted model only for tasks requiring additional capability.

The important decision is not whether local or cloud AI sounds more impressive. It is which approach produces reliable results at an acceptable total cost.
